Tenure and Public Schools: The Problems

Public school teaching is one of the most stable and benefit-laden jobs in existence.. Why is getting tenure so bad? It’s bad for the students. At many schools, the requirement for tenure is for 3 years of experience and approval by the Board of Education. Often, the un-tenured teachers are evaluated for the first three years. They are watched occasionally by administrators to judge their capabilities. This creates the feeling of pressure so they try their hardest to perform well at their job.
What happens after the first three years? After the teachers are placed on tenure, the evaluations they receive have almost no meaning. They are free to revert to mediocrity. Some of my best teachers were tenured, but the same was true for some of my worst. It is readily apparent when you are being taught by someone who was once brilliant but is not burnt out and does not care. All of this is because they feel as if they can’t be fired. While technically they can be fired, there is a very low chance as their contract almost guarantees job stability unless there is a serious violation of terms.

Tenure is screwing up the children of America. With low teacher turnover, new teachers can’t get jobs. Tenured teachers are getting paid more and more with raises and increasing the cost of education. Their quality of teaching is suffering and our children are getting dumber and dumber.

The goal of tenure is to provide some stability. It is to ensure there are fair relations between administration and the teachers. Still, it needs to be fixed or we will end up going by the wayside. Without a good core education for our young, we will surely drop to second or third in the world’s list of advanced societies.

One of the reasons that some private schools are regarded to be so good is that they do not have to hire union teachers. Because of this, their tenure system can be much more relaxed. This allows them to get rid of ineffective teachers and keep the faculty young and up to date with knowledge. There is no reason public schools can’t be like this.
