How to Determine Which Degree Program to Choose – A Brief Summary

One of the hardest decisions a person needs to make is which degree program he or she should pursue. Often people ask their friends, parents, relatives and teachers for guidance. The reason the decision is so important is because making the wrong decision not only wastes time, but also can cost you thousands. Confucius once said, “Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life”; how true is that? All of us know people who love what they do and are happy as well as the many bitter people who can’t stand going to work every morning pursuing a career they just don’t enjoy. Which do you want to be?

We asked a number of high school guidance councelors and military career specialists what they do to help the people they work with move down the correct path for themselves, the answer seems to be:

■Assessments
■Internships
■Research
Assessments seem to help people understand themselves better. Usually assessments ask an individual a series of questions, the answers determine the individual’s own outlook. Assessments are common to determine personality, motivation and skills.

Internships are a way for people to try out certain jobs or industries before making the big career leap of faith. People can experience a number of different job types and industries and then hopefully be able to make more informed decisions.

Research can help a person learn what each job, carer or industry is all about. Luckily, in todays world all of the necessary research is available instantly and free via the Internet. People should do their homework and learn about different careers and industries before choosing one.
