Homeschooled Kids in College «

Homeschooled Kids in College

The term culture shock is thrown around a lot these days. We hear about people moving to the next town over and having their world changed. Parents having children move out or empty nest syndrome as it’s known. But those pale in comparison to the greatest culture shock our generation can possibly understand: if a homeschooled kid decides to attend college.
There are homeschooled children in college. Mom’s basement isn’t regionally accredited. But how do these people even begin to adjust to this kind of lifestyle? First we have to examine how they got there.

Their parents either wanted to shield the children and be overprotective or just figured they could teach them better than certified teachers. While there are some benefits like individual attention, there are far more disadvantages. The kids never get socialized barring the parents arranging playdates or them participating in local sports, which they may be afraid to do simply because they don’t know any of the other kids. But at least in these situations they’ll always have their comfort zone to go back to. Even if they’re completely intimidated by the kids, they’ll always have home to go to and feel comfortable.

So just imagine when they head off to college. That essentially defines the term culture shock. They’ve most likely had very little socialization and therefore would find it very hard to adjust to a world where that is the main component of college life. They probably wouldn’t feel comfortable getting involved or just even being around the other kids. So what are they to do? You have to get an education somehow but the college experience may just not be for you or your lifestyle.

An online education is another popular option among homeschooled children. They can still do everything from their comfort zone while earning an accredited degree. It can be from somewhere like the University of Phoenix or other for profit schools or normal schools that just have online programs.

However, you have to take into account what life will be like after college. You can’t just stay in the basement forever. You have to go out into the world and find a job. Therefore, traditional college may still be the answer.
