Cursive Writing: One Simple Question «

Cursive Writing: One Simple Question

Think back to when you were in first grade if you can. They were just teaching you how to print letters and numbers but you just knew, could feel, that something better was on the horizon. Script was coming.
Drawing letters in block form was fine for first graders, but once you got to the next grade level up, you’d finally be able to connect those letters and make them look fancy. You’d finally have the skills of all the higher level kids in the school. The world would become your oyster if only you could write in script.

Now think again. When was the last time you actually used cursive writing? For me that answer was either the end of sophomore year or beginning of junior year of high school and haven’t looked back. Sure you have to sign your name sometimes but that’s really probably the extent of your current cursive playbook. Nobody you know probably writes in this manner. It’s just too messy, illegible and pretty much any problem that can exist within the realm of writing. So really this article boils down to one thing: why even teach cursive writing in the first place?

It’s not like you need to use it anywhere in life again, though that thought can be used for about 90% of what you learn in school. Sure you have to learn how to write your signature somehow, but many of us could probably just figure it out on your own. After all, it’s not like anyone actually needs to be able to read it. Just look at athletes’ signatures. You can’t read a single one can you? So that argument clearly doesn’t hold up either.

Are they just trying to give in to students? I don’t think so since it seems like teaching a whole new way of writing would be a complete mess. You just taught them how to print and now your teaching them a new system. Just doesn’t seem worth it.

Maybe somebody somewhere believes that these are worthwhile studies for young students, but I just don’t get why in the long run. I could figure out my signature on my own. Just saying.
